Mike and Sharol Shutts

Mike and Sharol Shutts, along with their children, Joshua (1986), Joel (1990), and Joanna (1992), are missionaries serving in D.R. Congo. Prior to moving to Congo, they served in Lesotho, Africa for 17 years.

Mike saw the need for more maintenance staff in Lesotho and recognized that this is where the Lord has gifted him and has called him to serve. “If the planes are not flying due to maintenance issues, how can we meet the needs of the Basotho people? This is what I enjoy doing, using my God-given maintenance skills to spread the Gospel of Jesus.”  For the first eight years Mike served as a Maintenance Specialist in Lesotho, Director of Maintenance and Chief of Maintenance for Lesotho, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique.  In 2003, he became the Program Manager for Lesotho and served in this capacity until June 2008. After returning from furlough, he resumed the role of Director of Maintenance.

As they look back over the past few years they are amazed at how the Lord has been working in Lesotho and they feel blessed to be part of it.  Through the Flying Doctor Service, they were able to bring vital medical care to the remote mountain people and fly out critically ill patients to the hospital in Maseru, thus saving lives.  They have seen many come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ through the MAF Chaplin who visits these patients in the hospital and in their home villages.  Mike has also enjoyed teaching Sunday School at the local church and seeing many of them grow in to young adults who serve the Lord with their lives.

Sharol has found it very rewarding to be part of the Ladies Ministry and Bible study as she seeks to encourage and pray for other women.  She is also involved in other ministries which include volunteering to work in the MAF office, bookkeeping for Youth for Christ, providing hospitality, and keeping up on correspondence.

In 2013, the Shutts moved to another corner of Africa, Uganda, and began serving in the MAF Uganda/East Democratic Republic of Congo (EDRC) program.  Mike’s main role will be supporting the program through aircraft maintenance.
